Tips for Renting a Car in Cyprus: Rules And All You Need to Know in 2026
If you’re planning a trip to Cyprus, one of the best decisions you can make is renting a car. The island has far too many beautiful places scattered across different regions to rely only on taxis or public transport, especially if you want to explore beyond the obvious tourist spots. A rental car gives you the freedom to discover places you simply wouldn’t reach otherwise, from quiet beaches to mountain villages and viewpoints that never make it into standard itineraries.
When we moved to Cyprus, we didn’t own a car straight away. We spent quite a bit of time renting cars ourselves to explore different parts of the island. That firsthand experience taught us exactly what to look out for, what to avoid, and how to make the whole process stress-free.
In this guide, we’re sharing everything you need to know about renting a car in Cyprus in 2026, from where to book and what the requirements are, to local driving rules, practical tips, and the places that are genuinely worth the drive so you can make the most of your time on the island.

Why You Should Rent a Car in Cyprus
Cyprus is one of those destinations where having a car genuinely changes the kind of trip you can have. While the major cities are easy enough to reach, many of the island’s most memorable places are spread out across different regions, from archaeological sites and mountain villages to remote beaches and scenic viewpoints.
A rental car gives you the freedom to explore at your own pace, stop whenever something catches your eye, and reach places that public transport simply doesn’t cover well. This is especially useful if you’re planning a road trip, travelling with children, staying in more than one area, or wanting to spend time in the Troodos Mountains, where distances are longer and bus connections limited.
It also makes day trips in Cyprus much easier, even if you’re based in just one location. You can head out early, avoid strict schedules, and fit much more into your day without depending on expensive taxis or InterCity bus timetables.
We also found that driving in Cyprus often leads to the places you hadn’t planned but end up remembering most, whether that’s a quiet village square, a roadside viewpoint, or a beach you would never have discovered otherwise.
That said, if you’re staying in one resort area and mainly plan to relax nearby, you may not need a car every day. In that case, renting one just for selected day trips can sometimes be the better option.

Where to Hire a Car in Cyprus
When it comes to renting a car in Cyprus, you’ve got a few different options. In most cases, the easiest and most convenient choice is picking up your car directly at the airport. However, you’ll also find plenty of rental options in the main towns and tourist areas across the island.
Rent a car at the airport (Larnaca or Paphos)
For most travellers, renting a car at the airport is by far the simplest option. Cyprus has two main airports, Larnaca International Airport and Paphos International Airport, and both are very well set up for car hire. If you’ve already decided where you’re flying into, it’s worth booking your car hire at Larnaca Airport or Paphos Airport in advance to secure the best rates and availability, especially if you’re visiting during the busy summer months.
At both airports, you’ll find a wide range of car rental companies located either inside the terminal or just outside, with the cars waiting for you in the airport’s rental car parking lot outside the airport. Other providers are based nearby and offer a free shuttle service, which is usually quick and straightforward.
We’ve had a really good experience with the car rental company Green Motion, which offers a smooth rental process and well-maintained rental cars. They operate car rental stations close to the two airports and in popular areas like Ayia Napa and Limassol.
Picking up your car straight after landing makes the whole arrival and car rental experience much smoother. You won’t need to organise a taxi or transfer to your accommodation, which can be surprisingly expensive in Cyprus. And since there are various petrol stations right outside the airport, returning your car to the car rental agencies is similarly convenient.
Rent a car in towns and tourist areas
If you’re not picking up a car at the airport, you can easily rent one from car hire companies in the major towns, including Larnaca, Paphos, Limassol, Ayia Napa, and Protaraas.
This can be a good option if you’re planning to spend a few days relaxing first and only need a car later for day trips or exploring different parts of the island.
That said, availability can be more limited compared to the airports, especially in high season. Prices can also be slightly higher, so it’s still worth booking ahead where possible.
How to Book Your Rental Car in Cyprus
Booking a rental car for Cyprus is usually very straightforward, especially if you use a comparison platform such as DiscoverCars. It allows you to compare prices, rental conditions, and available vehicles across different providers, which makes it much easier to find the best option for your trip.
Step-by-Step Guide to Booking Your Car with Discover Cars:
Step 1: Visit Discovercars.com.
Step 2: Enter your travel dates and select your pick-up and drop-off location. This will usually be either Larnaca International Airport or Paphos International Airport, although you can also choose pick-up in towns such as Larnaca, Paphos, Limassol, Ayia Napa, or Protaras.
Step 3: Browse the available vehicles and compare the options carefully. Each listing usually includes customer reviews and important rental conditions such as accepted cards, deposit requirements, fuel policy, mileage limits, driver and age requirements, insurance options, and whether crossing into Northern Cyprus is allowed, as this can vary depending on the supplier.
Step 4: Once you’ve chosen your car, you can add optional extras such as an additional driver, child seats, or GPS if needed.
Step 5: Decide whether you want to add full coverage insurance. In Cyprus, this is often worth considering, even if it increases the total price slightly.
Step 6: Complete the booking. After confirmation, you’ll receive your Discover Cars voucher by email. You’ll usually need this when collecting the car, together with your driving licence, passport or ID, and the credit card used for the reservation.
🚙 OUR GO-TO CAR RENTAL COMPANY: DISCOVER CARS
When booking a rental car online, we personally recommend and always use Discover Cars. The platform compares both major international car rental companies and smaller local agencies, which often helps find better deals. Plus, there are no hidden costs and they offer free cancellation if your plans change. We typically opt for full coverage since the rates are very reasonable and it gives extra peace of mind while traveling.

Renting a Car in Cyprus: Cost and Payment
When booking through DiscoverCars, you’ll often benefit from competitive prices because the platform works directly with rental companies and compares multiple offers in one place. This usually makes it easier to find a good deal, especially if you book early.
Rental car prices in Cyprus are seasonal, so if you’re looking for lower rates, travelling during the shoulder season can make a noticeable difference. In Cyprus, this usually means spring and autumn, with good prices often available until November, outside the busiest summer months.
Depending on the season, the type of car, and how early you book, rental prices usually range between €15 and €50 per day. Small economy cars are often the cheapest option, while larger vehicles, automatic cars, and premium models can cost significantly more.
💡 Discover Cars offers two payment options for rental cars:
Partial prepayment: You pay part of the rental cost when booking and the remaining amount when collecting the car.
Full prepayment: You pay the full rental amount in advance, often with flexible cancellation available up to a certain point before pick-up.
Before confirming your booking, it’s always worth checking the price breakdown carefully, especially what is included in the insurance and whether a deposit is required at pick-up.
Full Coverage for Your Car Rental in Cyprus
To make your road trip around Cyprus as stress-free as possible, we’d generally recommend considering full coverage insurance when booking your rental car, especially if you plan to explore beyond the main towns.
While basic insurance is often included, full coverage usually protects you against many of the extra costs that can quickly become expensive if something happens during your trip, including:
- Deductible coverage for damage, theft, vandalism, or hit-and-run incidents
- Repair costs for car’s body, undercarriage, tires, wheels, roof, windows, mirrors, lamps, and mechanical damage resulting from a collision
- Windscreen damage, which can happen more easily than you might expect because of loose stones on rural roads
- Towing costs and roadside assistance after an accident
- Key-related costs, such as losing the key or locking yourself out of the car
- Administrative fees charged by the rental company in case of damage
- Misfuelling costs, if the wrong fuel is accidentally used
In Cyprus, small parking dents are not unusual, especially in tighter town parking spaces, and stone chips can happen on country roads or in mountain areas. If you plan to drive to more remote beaches or villages, uneven roads can also increase the chance of minor damage underneath the car.
For us, full coverage is mainly about peace of mind. It means you can enjoy the trip without worrying about every small scratch or unexpected extra charge. We had one situation ourselves where we needed to submit a compensation request, and the process was handled quickly and smoothly, which left us with a very positive impression.

Cyprus Car Rental: Documents and Requirements
Before collecting your rental car in Cyprus, it’s worth checking that you have all required documents ready. Your booking voucher will usually list exactly what the rental company expects, but in most cases you’ll need the following:
Most rental companies in Cyprus also have age and licence requirements. While the minimum age is often 21, many providers set the standard minimum age at 25 or 26, especially for certain car categories.
Drivers under 25 usually need to have held their driving licence for at least two or three years and often have to pay an additional young driver surcharge. Some rental companies also apply a surcharge for older drivers, usually from around 70 years onwards, although this varies depending on the provider.
If you’re travelling from the UK or another EU country, your normal driving licence is usually accepted without any issues. If your licence is issued outside the EU or uses a non-Roman alphabet, you’ll usually also need an International Driving Permit (IDP) alongside your original licence.
As rental conditions can vary slightly between companies, it’s always worth checking the rental agreement before booking so there are no surprises when collecting your car.
Helpful Tips for Hiring a Car in Cyprus
When renting a car in Cyprus, a few simple checks can make the whole experience much smoother and help you avoid unnecessary stress during your trip:
- Book with full coverage insurance: If your budget allows, full coverage is worth considering, especially if you plan to drive beyond the main towns, use gravel roads to get to the beaches, or explore rural areas.
- Book early if you need an automatic car: Most of the cheaper rental cars in Cyprus are manual. Automatic cars are available, but they are fewer in number and usually booked quickly, especially during peak season.
- Take detailed photos before driving off: Always inspect the car carefully before leaving. We usually take photos and a short video of the entire car, including wheels, mirrors, windscreen, and interior, so everything is documented.
- Choose fully prepaid options if possible: This often makes collection quicker and avoids extra payment steps when picking up the car.
- Use well-rated rental companies: It’s worth checking recent reviews and choosing suppliers with consistently strong ratings for reliability and customer service.
- Check the mileage policy: Most rentals in Cyprus include unlimited mileage, but it’s still worth confirming, especially if you’re planning longer drives across the island.
- Read the rental conditions carefully: Important details such as insurance exclusions, fuel policy, deposit rules, and age requirements can differ between providers.
- Review your booking voucher before arrival: This helps you avoid surprises at pick-up and ensures you have all required documents ready.
Driving in Cyprus
Before driving in Cyprus, it helps to know a few local rules and habits because some things may feel different at first, especially if you’re used to driving on the right.
- Roads and road orientation: In Cyprus, you drive on the left-hand side, a legacy of the island’s British history. It may feel unusual at first, but most visitors adjust surprisingly quickly. Roads and motorways are generally in very good condition, well maintained, and easy to drive on. There are no toll roads in Cyprus. In the mountains, roads can become winding, while some streets in older town centres are narrow.
- Parking availability: Parking is generally very easy across Cyprus. In most towns, villages, and beach areas, you’ll usually find a spot without much difficulty. Many parking areas are free, and even in busier tourist areas parking is often inexpensive. In city centres, you may still come across older parking meters that require coins. One important rule to remember is that two yellow lines along the side of the road mean no parking and no waiting, even if other cars are ignoring it.
- Traffic and local driving style: Driving in Cyprus can feel lively, especially in towns and popular coastal areas where cars, buses, ATVs, buggies, and scooters all share the road. Local driving can be assertive, and some traffic rules are treated rather loosely. It’s not unusual to see drivers changing lanes late, skipping indicators, or taking roundabouts creatively. One thing worth knowing is that all rental cars in Cyprus have red licence plates, which means other drivers immediately know you’re in a hire car.
- Speed limits: Unless signs indicate otherwise, speed limits are usually 100 km/h (62 mph) on highways, 80 km/h (50 mph) on some motorways, 65 km/h (40 mph) on many countryside roads, and 50 km/h (31 mph) in towns, villages, and built-up areas.
- Navigation: Navigation is very straightforward in Cyprus. Road signs are written in both Greek and English, and apps like Google Maps work reliably across the island.
- Connectivity: Having mobile data makes driving much easier, especially for navigation, so using a Europe eSIM can be very practical during your trip. One important rule to remember is that using a hand-held mobile phone while driving is prohibited.
- Driving to Northern Cyprus: This is an important point many visitors overlook. Most rental companies do not allow rental cars to cross into Northern Cyprus. Even if you purchase third-party insurance at the border, this usually still violates the rental agreement and can invalidate your insurance cover. If you plan to visit the north, the safest option is usually to leave your rental car in Nicosia on the southern side and continue with a separate rental after crossing the border.

Best Places to Visit in Cyprus by Car
One of the biggest advantages of renting a car in Cyprus is how much more of the island becomes accessible. Some of the places we’ve enjoyed most are the ones you simply wouldn’t reach easily without your own car, whether that’s a quiet village, a scenic mountain road, or a beach tucked away from the main tourist areas.
Of course, the major cities are worth exploring too. Paphos offers archaeological sites and coastal views, Nicosia gives you a completely different side of the island with its divided capital atmosphere, while Limassol and Larnaca both combine city life with easy access to the sea.
If you’re looking for beaches, driving gives you the flexibility to explore areas like Ayia Napa and Protaras, where some of Cyprus’ most beautiful beaches are found, but also smaller coastal spots in between that many visitors miss.
For a completely different side of Cyprus, we’d always recommend heading inland as well. Villages such as Omodos and Lefkara are perfect examples of why driving around Cyprus is so rewarding, with traditional stone streets, local character, and a pace that feels very different from the coast.

FAQ – Renting A Car in Cyprus
What are the requirements to rent a car in Cyprus?
To rent a car in Cyprus, you’ll usually need a valid driving licence, your passport or ID, a credit or debit card, and your booking confirmation. Most rental companies require drivers to be at least 21, although 25 or older is more common for many providers. You’ll also usually need to have held your licence for at least two or three years, depending on the rental company.
Is it worth hiring a car in Cyprus?
Yes, for most trips it definitely is. Cyprus has many beautiful places spread across the island, and public transport is limited once you leave the main towns. A car gives you the freedom to visit beaches, mountain villages, archaeological sites, and hidden spots at your own pace without relying on buses or expensive taxis.
Can I cross the Cyprus border with a rental car?
In most cases, no. Most rental companies do not allow their cars to cross into Northern Cyprus, even if additional insurance is purchased at the border. Doing so usually violates the rental agreement and can invalidate your insurance. If you plan to visit the north, the safest option is to leave your car on the southern side and continue with a separate rental after crossing.
