Best Area to Stay in Cyprus

Choosing where to stay in Cyprus depends entirely on the kind of holiday you want. Some areas are ideal for long beach days, others suit nightlife, culture, or a quieter base with easy access to different parts of the island. Although Cyprus is relatively small, each region offers a very different atmosphere.

If you’re visiting for the first time, it’s not always obvious which area fits best. A lively coastal town may sound appealing until you realise you’d rather have slower evenings, while a peaceful village setting may not suit every type of trip.

Because we live in Cyprus and have stayed in all the main areas during our travels across the island over the past few years, we’ve seen firsthand how much your base shapes your overall experience. Every place has its own character and shows you a different side of the island.

In this guide, we’ll help you find the best area to stay in Cyprus for your trip, whether you’re looking for budget-friendly stays, villas, or luxury hotels in the location that suits your plans best.

Best Cyprus Areas to Stay in at a Glance

Cyprus offers very different experiences depending on where you choose to stay, and that’s exactly why picking the right base matters. Larnaca works well if you want a relaxed coastal city with an easy airport arrival, while Paphos suits travellers looking for history, sea views, and a practical base for exploring the west of the island. Limassol feels more cosmopolitan, with a city atmosphere, stylish hotels, and a strong restaurant scene.

On the east coast, Ayia Napa and Protaras are the best choices if beaches are your priority. Ayia Napa is livelier and better known for nightlife, while Protaras feels calmer and often works better for couples and families. Nicosia offers a completely different side of Cyprus, with culture, museums, and city life away from the coast, while the Troodos Mountains are ideal if you want traditional villages, cooler air, and a slower pace surrounded by nature.

7 Best Areas to Stay in Cyprus

If you’re planning a trip to Cyprus, choosing the right base can make a big difference to your overall experience. Each area in Cyprus offers a different atmosphere, and the best choice depends on what kind of trip you want to have. Some places are ideal for beach days and lively evenings, while others work better for culture, scenic drives, or a quieter stay. Below, we look at each area in more detail so you can decide which base suits your holiday best.

1. Larnaca

If you’re looking for a practical base that makes exploring the island easy, Larnaca is often the best place to stay for day trips in Cyprus. Its biggest advantage is location. The city sits right next to Cyprus’s main international airport, which makes arrivals and departures simple, especially if you’re visiting for a shorter stay and want to spend more time exploring rather than driving across the island.

From here, you can comfortably reach Nicosia, Ayia Napa, Protaras, Limassol, and even parts of the Troodos Mountains on day trips, which gives you plenty of flexibility without changing hotels. At the same time, Larnaca itself offers enough variety to fill several relaxed days, with beaches, local restaurants, cultural sights, and a pleasant seafront atmosphere that feels easy to settle into.

We’d recommend staying around Finikoudes, where the palm-lined promenade, beach, and restaurants give you everything within easy walking distance. Just behind the seafront, the old town adds a more local side to the city, with smaller streets, traditional cafés, and historic corners worth exploring. Larnaca is also one of the best places on the island for scuba diving, especially if you’re interested in diving the famous Zenobia Wreck.

➞ Leonardo Boutique Hotel Larnaca – our top tip!
➞ Warner Boutique Hotel – modern adults-only hotel in a central location
➞ Qbic City Hotel – elegant hotel in the center, close to the beach

    2. Paphos

Located on the southwest coast of the island, Paphos is one of the most popular holiday bases in Cyprus and a strong choice if you want a mix of coastline, archaeology, outdoor activities, and a slower pace. The city also has its own airport, which makes arrival and departure easy, especially if you’re planning to stay in the western part of the island.

Paphos is one of the best places to stay in Cyprus for culture, with a strong focus on history, from ancient mosaics to archaeological sites that form part of a UNESCO World Heritage area. At the same time, the atmosphere feels more relaxed than in some of the island’s busier resorts, which is one reason it’s also considered one of the best places to visit in Cyprus for couples.

It also works particularly well if you want to explore the Blue Lagoon and the Akamas Peninsula in the northwest, while still having access to beaches such as Coral Bay. It’s one of those areas we think deserves a place on every Cyprus itinerary.

For your stay, you’ll find many hotels along Poseidonos Street near the seafront, in the town centre, and further along the west coast in places such as Chloraka, Coral Bay, and Sea Caves.

    Our hotel recommendations in Paphos:
➞ Annabelle Hotel – our top tip!
➞ Kentrikon 1924 Boutique Hotel – charming boutique hotel in the Old Town
➞ Serbellas Boutique Hotel – fantastic seafront-hotel in Kissonerga
➞ Cali Resort & Spa – modern adults-only hotel in Coral Bay
➞ Cap St Georges Hotel & Resort – luxurious resort ideal for special occasions

    3. Ayia Napa

If your priority is spending long days by the sea, Ayia Napa is one of the best places to go in Cyprus for beaches. The town is home to Nissi Beach, the island’s most famous beach, known for its turquoise water, soft white sand, and lively atmosphere that draws visitors throughout the summer. But Nissi Beach is just the beginning, and there are plenty of other beautiful beaches in Ayia Napa that are well worth visiting.

Ayia Napa is also the best area to stay in Cyprus for nightlife, especially if you enjoy beach clubs, buzzing bars, and long evenings that continue well after sunset. During peak season, the area attracts a younger crowd and has a very energetic feel, particularly around the centre of town.

There is more to the area than nightlife alone, with plenty of water sports, boat trips, and coastal places nearby to keep you occupied during the day. Staying in the town centre puts you close to everything, while accommodation just outside the main strip usually offers a better balance if you want the lively atmosphere without constant noise. With everything from villas to luxury hotels, Ayia Napa remains one of the island’s most popular holiday bases.

Our hotel recommendations in Ayia Napa:
➞ Napa Mermaid Hotel & Suites – charming hotel with good value for money
➞ Alion Beach Hotel – luxurious beachfront hotel with stunning views
➞ Amarande – elegant adults-only hotel with superb facilities
➞ NissiBlu Beach Resort – luxurious hotel located at the iconic Nissi Beach

    4. Protaras

Located on the east coast, Protaras is often the best area to stay in Cyprus for families if you want a beach holiday with a calmer atmosphere. Compared with nearby Ayia Napa, it feels much quieter, with a slower pace, less nightlife, and a more relaxed setting that also works very well for couples.

The area is especially known for being home to many of Cyprus’ most beautiful beaches such as Fig Tree Bay, where shallow clear water and soft sand make it ideal for long beach days. Nearby Vrissi Beach offers a similar feel, with a long seafront that is easy to enjoy on foot and plenty of restaurants within walking distance.

We’d recommend staying along the main area behind Fig Tree Bay and Vrissi Beach, where you have easy access to the coast and most of the restaurants. If you choose a hotel right on the beachfront, you’ll also get some of the most beautiful sunrise views on the island. Protaras is also a good choice for scuba diving, with several dive sites and clear water conditions nearby.

    Our hotel recommendations in Protaras:
➞ King Jason Protaras – Adults-only hotel at Fig Tree Bay with stunning sea views
➞ Capo Bay Hotel – central location in Protaras, directly at Fig Tree Bay Beach
➞ Cavo Zoe Seaside Hotel – seafront design hotel with a fantastic spa area
➞ Leonardo Crystal Cove Hotel & Spa – Adults-only hotel near Konnos Beach

    5. Limassol

If you want a more urban base with a mix of coast, restaurants, and city life, Limassol is one of the best place to go in Cyprus for that balance. The city has a more cosmopolitan feel than most other parts of the island, with a modern waterfront, a long promenade, and a strong focus on upscale dining and contemporary hotels.

At the same time, the Old Town adds contrast, with smaller streets, local cafés, and more character than the newer seafront areas. Around the marina, the atmosphere feels noticeably more polished, with luxury developments, stylish bars, and some of the island’s more expensive hotels.

Limassol also works well as a base if you want to explore further, with day trips to Larnaca, Paphos, and the Troodos Mountains all within easy reach. If you prefer city atmosphere, staying near the Old Town makes the most sense, while the eastern side of the city suits beach holidays and gives you easier access to the larger luxury hotels along the coast.

    Our hotel recommendations in Limassol:
➞ NYX Hotel Limassol – modern hotel in a great location with a rooftop pool
➞ Old Port Hotel – stylish hotel in a central location close to everything
➞ Four Seasons Hotel – luxurious 5-star beachfront hotel
➞ AMARA – luxurious 5-star resort with a great spa, ideal for a special occasion

    6. Nicosia

If you’re mainly interested in history, Nicosia offers a very different side of Cyprus from the coastal resorts. As the island’s only inland city, it feels more local and cultural, with museums, historic buildings, and the unique atmosphere of the divided capital.

The best area to stay is around the old town, where most sights are within walking distance and places such as Ledra Street put you close to cafés, shops, and the crossing point between the two sides of the city. This part of Nicosia has the most character and makes it easy to explore on foot.

That said, Nicosia is not the best place in Cyprus for a holiday if you’re mainly looking for beaches or a relaxed summer base. Temperatures here can feel noticeably hotter than on the coast, especially in summer, and unless you plan to spend several days exploring museums and urban sights, we’d usually recommend visiting Nicosia as a day trip rather than staying overnight.

    Our hotel recommendations in Nicosia:
➞ Gate Twenty Two Boutique Hotel – our top tip tip!
➞ Madama Residence – charming boutique hotel in the Old Town of Nicosia
➞ The Landmark Nicosia – luxurious hotel with excellent facilities

    7. Troodos Mountains

If you want a quieter base away from the coast, the Troodos Mountains are ideal for a nature-focused stay and one of the most beautiful places in Cyprus to slow down for a few days. Temperatures here are usually cooler than along the coast, which can make a noticeable difference, especially during summer.

The region is known for traditional villages, forest landscapes, hiking routes, and local wineries, which makes it a very different experience from staying in one of the island’s seaside towns. It’s the kind of place where the drive itself often becomes part of the experience as you explore mountain roads, village squares, and smaller local stops along the way.

The most famous villages are Omodos and Lefkara, both worth visiting for their character and traditional atmosphere. For where to stay, we’d simply recommend choosing a village or guesthouse that appeals to you and using it as your base to explore the surrounding mountain region.

Our hotel recommendations in the Troodos Mountains:
➞ Casale Panayiotis – charming hotel combining modern luxury & traditional style
➞ Thymises Boutique Hotel – small boutique hotel with stylish suites
➞ The Agora Hotel – part of Small Luxury Hotel of the World, adults-only

There is no single best area to stay in Cyprus because the right choice depends entirely on the kind of trip you want to have. Beaches, culture, nightlife, mountain villages, or a practical base for exploring all lead to very different experiences depending on where you stay.

If you’re visiting for the first time, it often helps to focus on what matters most to you rather than trying to fit everything into one location. In many cases, splitting your stay between two areas gives you the best balance and lets you experience different sides of the island without feeling rushed.

FAQ – Best Area to Stay in Cyprus

What is the best part of Cyprus to stay in?

The best part of Cyprus to stay in depends on what kind of holiday you want. Larnaca works very well if you want flexibility and easy access to different parts of the island, while Paphos is ideal if you prefer history, coastal scenery, and a more relaxed atmosphere. If beaches are your priority, the east coast around Protaras and Ayia Napa is often the better choice.

Is it better to stay in Larnaca or Paphos?

That depends on your travel style. Larnaca is usually more practical for shorter stays and day trips because of its central location and airport access. Paphos feels more scenic and relaxed, with more historic sights and a stronger holiday atmosphere if you want to spend most of your time in one area.

Where to stay in Cyprus without a car?

Without a car, Larnaca, Paphos, and Limassol are usually the easiest options because you can walk to restaurants, beaches, and many local sights, with better public transport connections than in smaller areas. Ayia Napa also works well without a car if you plan to stay close to the centre and beaches, as much of the town is easy to reach on foot during a beach-focused holiday. For the best day trips, however, we highly recommend renting a car in Cyprus.

Where to go in Cyprus for your first time?

For a first trip, Larnaca or Paphos are often the easiest choices because both are easy to reach from the airport and give you access to different parts of the island. If you mainly want a straightforward beach holiday, Ayia Napa or Protaras are often the better fit, especially if your focus is spending most of your time by the sea rather than exploring across the island.

What is the best area to stay in Cyprus for couples?

For couples, Paphos is often the strongest choice because it combines sea views, historic places, and a more relaxed atmosphere. Protaras also works very well if you want quieter beaches and peaceful evenings, while the Troodos Mountains suit couples looking for village stays and a slower pace away from the coast.
