How to Get to Ayia Napa

Getting to Ayia Napa is really easy. The closest airport is Larnaca International Airport (LCA), located 55 km (34 miles) away. As Cyprus’s main gateway for international travellers, Larnaca offers frequent flights from the UK, Europe, and beyond, with even more options during the summer months, making it the most convenient entry point.

Once you land, renting a car is the perfect way to start your holiday, giving you the freedom to explore Cyprus and fully embrace the vacation vibe. The major car rental agencies are conveniently located right at Larnaca Airport, so you can easily pick up a car as soon as you arrive.

Alternatively, you’ll find local rental companies in the nearby villages, many of which offer free shuttle buses to take you to and from their rental stations. From the airport, take the A3 motorway eastbound, and you’ll be in Ayia Napa in about 35 minutes.

If you prefer a hassle-free option, a private or shared airport transfer is the next best choice. Pre-booked transfers take the stress out of travel, offering direct transportation to your accommodation. Shared shuttles are a more budget-friendly alternative, though they may take longer due to multiple stops.

Using a taxi might be the fastest way to reach Ayia Napa but also the most expensive, as fares are around €50 – €60 one way. While convenient, taking a taxi both ways can quickly add up, making a rental car or transfer the better value option.

For budget travellers, public transport is available but takes by far the longest. You can take the Bus 425 from the airport to Larnaca city centre, then transfer to the InterCity Bus to Ayia Napa or Bus 711 to Kapparis, which stops in Ayia Napa. This journey takes at least 1.5 – 2 hours, costs €4.80 – €6.40 one way, but can get quite crowded during the summer.

How to Get Around Ayia Napa

We recommend renting a car to get around Ayia Napa, as it gives you the ultimate freedom to explore the town and the rest of Cyprus at your own pace. When we travel, we love having the flexibility to go wherever we want, whenever we want, without relying on schedules or paying for multiple transfers.

Having your own vehicle also allows you to venture off the beaten path and discover more remote, less touristy areas of the island. With a car, you can easily visit various beaches, charming villages, and stunning coastal spots beyond the resort, ensuring a truly authentic Cyprus experience.

That said, Ayia Napa is a relatively small town, so it’s easy to get around on foot. Most of the main attractions, beaches, and restaurants are within walking distance of the centre, making it a leisurely and enjoyable way to soak in the local atmosphere.

Although Ayia Napa doesn’t have extensive public transport, a few buses are available to take you to popular sights like Konnos Bay and the Sculpture Park. These are inexpensive, at €2 per ride, though keep in mind they only accept cash payments.

For a fun and adventurous way to explore, renting quads, ATVs, or buggies is a popular option, offering a chance to tackle some rugged terrain and enjoy the outdoors.

Taxis, however, can be quite expensive, so we don’t recommend relying on them for getting around unless necessary. If you’re looking for value, a rental car or alternative transport options are the best way to go.

Best Time to Visit Ayia Napa

Like much of Cyprus, Ayia Napa benefits from a Mediterranean climate with hot, sunny summers and mild winters. The ideal time to visit is between June and October, when the weather is perfect for beach days and the city’s lively nightlife. Summer in Ayia Napa is all about sunshine and sand, with temperatures often soaring above 30°C – making it a haven for sun lovers and partygoers, with almost no rain to spoil the fun.

If you prefer a quieter experience with mild warmth, the shoulder seasons from March to May and October to November are great times to visit. These months offer pleasant weather without the summer heat, perfect for excursions, sightseeing, and avoiding the crowds.

While winter in Ayia Napa, from December to February, is milder than in most other European destinations, it’s important to note that many of the town’s hotels, clubs, bars, shops, and restaurants close until spring. While this is a peaceful time for those seeking tranquility, don’t expect the lively atmosphere that defines the town during the warmer months.

Nissi Beach also serves as a vibrant hotspot, with DJ music pumping through beach bars and a lively atmosphere that attracts younger crowds and those young at heart. It’s the perfect place to soak up the sun, enjoy some refreshing drinks, and dance to the beat of the music while you watch the waves roll in. If you’re after excitement, Nissi Beach is the place to be, offering a fantastic mix of relaxation, fun, and social energy.

You can also head to the new Ayia Napa Marina, just outside the town, where you’ll find a selection of stylish cafés, upscale restaurants, and casual dining spots overlooking the luxurious yacht harbour. This modern waterfront destination offers a relaxed yet sophisticated atmosphere, perfect for enjoying a meal or a drink with stunning sea views or simply soaking in the cosmopolitan vibe of this newly developed area.
