10 Best Cyprus Day Trips

Cyprus may be a relatively small island, but it offers an impressive variety of places to explore beyond your immediate holiday base. From ancient ruins and mountain villages to beautiful coastlines and quiet natural landscapes, one of the things we’ve always appreciated most here is how quickly the scenery changes.

That’s what makes day trips in Cyprus so rewarding. Within a single day, you can combine historic sites, traditional villages, coastal viewpoints or even mountain roads without spending half the day in the car.

As the legendary birthplace of Aphrodite, Cyprus is deeply connected to mythology, but what makes the island especially interesting is how naturally history, culture and everyday local life come together across very different regions.

In this guide, we’re sharing the best Cyprus day trips, whether you’re looking for scenic drives, cultural stops, or a route that helps you experience more of the island in one day.

Best Way to Get Around Cyprus for Day Trips

Before choosing which day trips fit your Cyprus itinerary best, it helps to think about transport, because some routes are very straightforward while others are much easier with your own car.

For most day trips in Cyprus, hiring a car gives you the most flexibility, especially if you want to combine several stops in one day or visit villages, mountain roads and coastal spots that are difficult to reach by public transport. One of the advantages for UK travellers is that driving on the left feels familiar, which makes settling into Cyprus roads much easier.

🚙 OUR GO-TO CAR RENTAL COMPANY: DISCOVER CARS

When booking a rental car online, we personally recommend and always use Discover Cars. The platform compares both major international car rental companies and smaller local agencies, which often helps find better deals. Plus, there are no hidden costs and they offer free cancellation if your plans change. We typically opt for full coverage since the rates are very reasonable and it gives extra peace of mind while traveling.

Intercity buses work well if you’re travelling between larger cities such as Larnaca, Limassol, Nicosia, Paphos and Ayia Napa, but they become less practical once you want to add smaller villages or remote natural areas.

For places like the Akamas Peninsula or mountain villages, guided tours around Cyprus’s highlights can also be a very easy option, especially if you’d rather not drive yourself and want local insight along the way.

10 Best Day trips in Cyprus – Complete Guide

One of the best things about planning day trips in Cyprus is how much variety you can fit into a single day, whether you’re in the mood for mountain villages, archaeological sites, time by the beach or a relaxed day on the water. Some routes are ideal if you want to see several highlights close together, while others are best enjoyed at a slower pace so you can properly take in the atmosphere of each stop.

1. Akamas Peninsula and Blue Lagoon

If you’re staying in Paphos, the Akamas Peninsula is easily one of the best day trips from Paphos if you want to experience a wilder side of Cyprus. This protected area feels very different from the more developed coastline, with rugged landscapes, remote bays and scenic viewpoints that make it especially rewarding if you enjoy nature and a bit of adventure.

A day here can be as active or as relaxed as you want. Many people head straight to the famous Blue Lagoon for swimming, but you can also stop at the Baths of Aphrodite, explore one of the hiking trails across the peninsula, or spend time enjoying the coastline from the water. We’ve visited the Blue Lagoon several times, and every time we end up hiring a small self-drive boat, simply because in our opinion it’s the best way to explore this stretch of coastline properly and reach the coves at your own pace. If you’d rather not drive a boat yourself, boat tours to the Blue Lagoon are just as easy to arrange and are a very popular way to experience the area.

If you still have time, Avakas Gorge works well as an additional stop before or after visiting the peninsula. It sits further south and offers a completely different landscape, with towering rock walls and a short walk through one of the island’s most impressive natural gorges.

2. Paphos Archaeological Park and Tombs of the Kings

If you’re interested in Cyprus’ layered history, spending a day exploring Paphos Archaeological Park and Tombs of the Kings is one of the easiest and most rewarding cultural day trips on the island. Both sites are close enough to combine comfortably, with enough time in between to enjoy the day at a relaxed pace.

We usually start at the Archaeological Park, where you can walk through Roman villas, ancient columns and some of the most impressive mosaics in Cyprus. The site is very open, so earlier in the day usually feels more comfortable, especially during summer.

To enhance your experience, you can join a private walking tour with a professional guide, who will provide in-depth knowledge of the site’s rich history and significance.

After a lunch break around Paphos Harbour, Tombs of the Kings offers a completely different atmosphere, with underground chambers carved deep into the rock and a setting that feels strikingly different from the ruins earlier in the day. Despite the name, no kings were actually buried here, but it remains one of the most impressive historic sites in Cyprus for us and still gives us that little sense of discovery every time we visit.

3. Troodos Mountains

A day in the Troodos Mountains shows a completely different side of Cyprus and is easily one of the best tours in Cyprus if you want to know more about local life beyond the coastline. The scenery changes quickly here, with winding mountain roads, forested slopes and villages that feel far removed from the busy resort areas.

Make sure to visit the Kykkos Monastery and the nearby Throni Shrine, where the mountain views alone already make the drive worthwhile. From there, places like Kakopetria offer a completely different atmosphere, with old stone houses and quiet lanes, while the Venetian bridges in the area such as Tzelefos Bridge or the smaller bridges around Treis Elies add another scenic stop if you enjoy short detours along the route.

We also always enjoy returning to Omodos, which remains one of those villages where simply wandering through the narrow streets is part of the experience. We usually visit the monastery, take our time around the village square and inevitably end up stopping for a coffee before moving on, because it’s one of those places that invites you to slow down rather than follow a strict schedule.

    4. Wine tasting in the Troodos Mountains

If you enjoy discovering local flavours while travelling, a wine-focused day through the southern foothills of the Troodos Mountains is one of the best things to do in Cyprus, especially if you want to experience a more traditional Cypriot side of the island beyond the coast. Cyprus has seven official wine routes, all spread across the south and west, which makes them especially easy to explore from Paphos, Limassol or Larnaca.

We always enjoy trying local wines when we travel, and Cyprus has plenty worth paying attention to, especially Xynisteri, the island’s indigenous white grape, which we’ve grown particularly fond of. One winery we really enjoyed visiting was Vlassides Winery, where we tasted several wines and ordered a small snack board alongside, which made it very easy to stay longer than planned.

One of the best things about this trip is how naturally everything fits together. You’ll pass charming villages, local wineries, and scenic mountain roads, making the day feel varied rather than focused on just one destination.

    5. Limassol, Kolossi Castle, Kourion and Aphrodite’s Rock

This is one of those routes that works particularly well when you want several very different impressions of Cyprus in a single day. It combines history, archaeology, coastal scenery and a city stop without requiring long driving distances. We like this route because nothing feels rushed, even when you include several stops.

A good first stop is Kolossi Castle, which is small enough to visit without needing too much time but still offers an interesting glimpse into Cyprus’ medieval past. From there, Kourion feels completely different, and this is one of the places we always enjoy returning to because wandering through the ancient site with the sea stretching out behind it makes the whole setting especially memorable. It’s one of those places where you immediately understand why people chose to settle here centuries ago.

Later in the day, Aphrodite’s Rock is an easy final stop if you continue west, especially around late afternoon when the light becomes softer and the coastline looks particularly striking. If you prefer, you can also return to Limassol afterwards and spend some time along the seafront or in the old town, where the contrast between the marina area and the older streets gives the city a very easy atmosphere to end the day in.

    6. Larnaca and Pano Lefkara

A day combining Larnaca with Pano Lefkara works especially well if you want a mix of city highlights and village atmosphere without covering too much distance. It is also one of the easiest day trips to organise because the route is straightforward and doesn’t require a full day of driving.

In Larnaca, you can comfortably combine several of the city’s main sights, including Church of Saint Lazarus, Larnaca Medieval Fort, Finikoudes Beach, Hala Sultan Tekke, and Kamares Aqueduct. They are all very different in character, which makes Larnaca surprisingly varied for a city that many people initially underestimate.

From there, heading inland to Pano Lefkara changes the atmosphere completely. For us, it remains one of the most beautiful villages in Cyprus (together with Omodos), with its stone houses, narrow lanes and quiet corners that make wandering here feel especially worthwhile without needing a fixed plan.

If you’re visiting Larnaca and Pano Lefkara from Paphos, we highly recommend hiring a car. Organised tours don’t usually allow enough time to fully explore both places, while driving yourself gives you much more flexibility.

Staying in Larnaca, Ayia Napa or Protaras? This guided day tour takes you to Larnaca, Lefkara and Nicosia, all in one day.

    7. Nicosia, the world’s last divided capital

Nicosia is one of the most fascinating city day trips on the island and easily one of the easiest day trips from Larnaca if you want something very different from the coast. As the only divided capital, it offers the unusual experience of seeing two very distinct sides of the city within a single day.

One of the things we always enjoy here is simply wandering through the old city around Ledra Street, where historic buildings, modern shops, small cafés and everyday city life all sit very naturally side by side. We’ve visited multiple times, and it’s one of those places where the contrast between old and new keeps the city interesting every time you return.

If you’d like, you can also cross the border on foot into the northern side of the city, which makes the whole visit especially unique because you experience two cultures in one day within just a short walk. That contrast is exactly what makes Nicosia feel so different from anywhere else in Cyprus.

    8. Cape Greco National Park

Cape Greco National Park is one of the best day trips in Cyprus if you enjoy coastal scenery, short walks and places where you can easily combine several stops without much driving. The landscape here feels very different again, with dramatic cliffs, clear water and open views across the coastline towards Ayia Napa.

There are several hiking trails through the park, but even without committing to a long walk, it’s easy to stop at highlights such as the sea caves, Ayioi Anargiroi Chapel and Kamara tou Koraka, which is one of the most striking natural rock formations in the area. It’s also one of those routes where every viewpoint seems to justify another short pause.

If the weather allows, the small lagoon often referred to as Cyprus’ other Blue Lagoon is also a lovely place for a swim, especially if you want to cool off between viewpoints. It’s one of those areas where you can easily spend far longer than expected because every short stop leads naturally to the next.

    Best Cape Greco tours:

➞ Quad Bike Safari (from Ayia Napa)

➞ Cape Greco Diving (from Ayia Napa, Protaras, or Paralimni)

    9. Ayia Napa and Protaras

If you’re in the mood for a slower full day built almost entirely around the coast, combining Ayia Napa and Protaras is ideal. This part of the island is less about ticking off sights and more about settling into the rhythm of the day, moving between beaches, stopping whenever a spot looks inviting and simply enjoying being by the water.

In our opinion, the eastern coast has the best beaches in Cyprus. With soft golden sand and exceptionally clear water right on our doorstep, we often feel there’s little reason to look elsewhere when we’re craving a proper beach day. Even in October and November, the sea often stays warm enough for swimming.

Places like Nissi Beach, Fig Tree Bay and Konnos Beach all work well for beach hopping if you want variety, while a drink at one of the beach bars somewhere along the route is often all you need to settle into island life properly for the day.

    10. Boat trips in Cyprus

A boat trip is one of those day experiences that fits almost any Cyprus itinerary, especially if you want a slower day centred entirely around the coast. It also gives you access to bays, sea caves and stretches of shoreline that either feel completely different from the water or simply aren’t accessible by land at all.

We always enjoy hiring a small self-drive boat or joining a boat cruise when we get the chance, because seeing the coastline from the water never gets old. Dropping anchor in a quiet bay, jumping straight into the sea and staying there for a while is one of those simple things that always feels like a proper island day.

One thing that’s worth knowing before you book is that Cyprus is home to two places called the Blue Lagoon. The most famous is in the Akamas Peninsula near Paphos, while the other is at Cape Greco near Ayia Napa and Protaras. Both are known for their crystal-clear turquoise water, but they offer very different experiences depending on which part of the island you’re visiting.

Need a Little Help Planning Your Cyprus Trip?

Planning a trip to Cyprus is exciting, but working out what to see, where to stay and how to fit it all together isn’t always so easy. That’s where we come in, with three ways to make planning easier, from a little expert guidance to a fully personalised Cyprus itinerary.

One of the things we appreciate most about Cyprus is how easy it is to build variety into a trip without constantly changing accommodation. Within a relatively short drive, you can move from mountain villages to archaeological sites, quiet coves or lively coastal towns, which makes day trips one of the best ways to experience how diverse the island really is.

Whether you prefer historic places, scenic drives, time by the sea or discovering local villages, there’s enough variety here to shape each day differently and still leave plenty for another visit.
